In this debut adventure, Basil and his loyal friend Dr. David Q. My Thoughts

I have always loved a good mystery. The copy I picked up at my local library was titled “Basil of Baker Street.” It wasn’t until I arrived home that I made the connection between this book and Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective.

This story is such a cute read. I love how the author made Basil into a mouse version of Sherlock Holmes. If you have a young detective in your home, this series is sure to entertain. Some words may be a little more difficult for today’s reader, but it’s an excellent opportunity to grow vocabulary!

Since the twins are kidnapped by strangers, this also provides us as parents and teachers another chance to reinforce who strangers are, what kids can do when approached by a stranger, what steps to take if they are lost, as well as other concepts surrounding this topic.

Overall, the story is filled with charm, wit, and a touch of suspense, making it an engaging read for young audiences. It celebrates ingenuity, teamwork, and the power of deduction while paying homage to the classic Sherlock Holmes tales.

Themes of Friendship, Bravery, and Curiosity

While Basil’s stories are full of thrilling mysteries, they also teach important lessons. Basil’s friendship with Dr. Dawson shows the power of teamwork and loyalty. And, just like Basil never gives up when solving a case, readers learn about perseverance and how important it is to keep trying, even when things get tough.

Basil’s adventures also encourage curiosity. He’s always asking questions, searching for answers, and looking at things from different angles. In a world where curiosity leads to discovery, Basil shows kids that learning and exploring are keys to unlocking new possibilities.

Activity Ideas

1. Become a Detective

Give students a small “mystery” to solve in the room. Hide an object or leave simple clues and ask them to observe carefully and deduce what happened, just like Basil.

2. Observation Challenge

Place several small items on a table for 30 seconds. Cover them and ask students to list everything they remember seeing. This mirrors Basil’s strong observation skills.

3. Write a Mini Mystery

Ask students to write or tell a short mystery story featuring Basil or another detective character solving a problem.

4. Baker Street Map Activity

Have students create a map of Basil’s neighborhood under the floorboards of Baker Street. They can imagine where different mouse homes, shops, or secret passages might be.

5. Secret Code Messages

Detectives often use codes. Students can create simple secret messages for others to decode using symbols, numbers, or letter substitutions.
